According to calculations by the EU statistics authority Eurostat, almost 30 percent of 18- to 64-year-old people in Greece already live at or below the poverty line. Due to the Covid 19 crisis, the situation has got worse. More and more homeless people live on the streets but not only in Athens, also in Piraeus and Thessaloniki.
Through lack of space in the social institutions, local and foreign aid organizations are trying to alleviate the situation. For years, the Griechenlandhilfe has provided the homeless people at the port of Piraeus with water, food, warm boots, jackets, sleeping bags and blankets.
That is due to the fact that winter temperatures are also found in Greece and the thermometer often goes down to degrees below zero. Homelessness and poverty are also reasons for making people lonely and excluded from social life. We do not want to turn a blind eye to it.
